Dr. Stephen Sloan is a public historian specializing in twentieth-century U.S. history, the American West, environmental history, and community history. He received a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master’s degree in history from Baylor, and he earned a doctorate in public history and U.S. history from Arizona State University. Sloan returned to Baylor in 2007 as Institute director and assistant professor in the Department of History.
Prior to that, he served as co-director of the Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage at the University of Southern Mississippi. At Baylor, Sloan organizes research projects, leads community oral history workshops, directs grants and contracts, conducts field interviews, and teaches the graduate seminar in oral history. He has led the Institute into the digital age, a shift that has impacted all facets of our work, including interviewing, processing, preserving, and public programming. In addition to the graduate seminar in oral history, Dr. Sloan teaches American environmental history, U.S. history since 1977, and the American West.
